This week (Wednesday morning) I took our first step toward getting health coverage that could actually serve us. My wife's employer does offer health insurance but our income level we could not afford it. We had been watching the Affordable Care Act hoping that affordable healthcare would be a reality for the working poor like us. After waiting until hearing that the website was functional and was not crashing upon open we jumped in and created an application and to our joy got a tacit acceptance pending disclosure of the standard items needed for this sort of thing, actually a very painless start.

Rules of the Road
Welcome to my journey. It is my hope to chronicle my steps to a successful acquisition of affordable health care for our family. It is just that. It is not a red vs blue site we are all purple people here (red + blue). This issue understandably has both parties emotionally charged right now and there are plenty of sites to vent wrath, criticism and rhetoric. But not here. For the "purple" people who come here to follow our journey I hope something I learn along the way will be helpful to you as I truly believe by sharing information and helping one another we can get where we need to go.
Our Family
First let me say this is not comfortable. I came the the conclusion I have to disclose some very personal information about us to be truly effective in what I am about to do. Our income and health status are vital to this journey and after much thought and stress we decided it was sadly important to be disclosed.
Deep breath............here is goes...
We did all the traditional things in life we were supposed to do, good education, good jobs, played by all the rules etc., just like most all of you. I even started my own small company. During the downturn not much business was coming in but I kept staff anyway paying them until they could find work. Once the doors closed and I was just starting to regroup we found out I had a severe health condition which robbed all savings and my heath in one broad brush stroke. My wife moved back into the work force and is now the sole bread winner making our house hold income just above the 133% mark of the Federal Poverty Level. And this is were we stand today, savings gone, income low and one member (me) virtually unable to work. The journey starts..our family under stress, trying to improve my health so I can reenter the work force in a meaningful way and once again be a contributor not only to my family but to the community as a whole.
